Doctoral course on heat stress and its effects

In conjunction with Geof Dahl's Jean d'Alembert Chair and the visit of visiting professor Pete Hansen, we have organized a two-week doctoral course on heat stress with colleagues from INRAE, AgroParisTech and the Graduate School Biosphera at the Université Paris-Saclay. The first week will focus on heat stress concepts and effects in agriculture, including plants. The second week will focus on heat stress in ruminants.

With climate change underway, global warming is accompanied by intense climatic episodes and high temperatures. All agricultural sectors are concerned by these events, which will affect plant and animal health and production.

The aim of this doctoral course in English is to explain what heat stress is, how to measure it, its effects on agricultural production and how to deal with it.

  • The first module (8/9 to 12/9/2025) covers the general principles of heat and heat stress measurement, and the effects of heat stress on plants and animals in general. The means of remediation currently proposed will be presented. A TD on temperature measurement in the field will be organized for face-to-face participants.
  • The second module (from 9/29 to 10/3/2025) focuses on the effects and remediation of heat stress in ruminant farming, with contributions from specialists from the University of Florida.

For both modules, a small amount of personal work by participants will be the subject of a scientific discussion on the final day.  These two modules are open to all doctoral students from the ABIES ED, but also to doctoral students from other EDs who may be interested, and to all interested staff. Although linked, they can be taken independently.

Classes will be given in English, both in person at AgroParisTech and by videoconference.

Registration is free but compulsory. Details can be found on the ED ABIES registration link (for PhD students only) and in the attachment : https://adum.fr/script/formations.pl?mod=3692118&site=abies
